Differences between Wooden and PVC Pergolas

What are the differences between a PVC and wood pergola? Luxury Screens explains.

We owe the term "pergola" our Italian friends who designed these structures from brick or cast-glass in the city of the same name. Later, the Italians would also use wrought iron and today we can craft pergolas of wood and PVC.

As noted in an earlier Luxury Screens blog post, pergolas are both decorative and useful for enjoying the outdoors, creating a bright new room with natural ventilation that is an extension of your home.

Appearance
Each material brings a different character and ambience to the garden. The style of the pergola is selected depending on the desired effect to work well with your natural environment. For example, a solid wood pergola covered with climbing grapevines creates a perfect rustic style, while a PVC pergola emphasizes an elegant contemporary lifestyle.

Maintenance
Pergolas made of wood require more maintenance than PVC. Wood suffers more when exposed to the elements and requires painting, while PVC pergolas are designed to include a weatherproof paint finish.

Installation
PVC pergolas are generally easier to assemble and they often come with pre-assembled parts. On the other hand, wooden structures are also made to order but are a bit more complex to install.

Advantages
You can install a glass roof in a wooden pergola, providing more natural light and gaining electricity savings. Luxury Screens PVC pergolas offer a drainage system that allows water to flow properly during the rainy season and require almost no maintenance.

Cost
PVC pergolas are 50% more expensive than wooden pergolas. However, if we consider the maintenance costs on a wooden structure, a PVC pergola is a better long-term investment.
