World Malaria Day: a call for prevention and control

April 25 is World Malaria Day, a date destined to endorse the fight against this disease, that every year claims hundreds of lives on the planet. Since 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the member states of the organization, declared the need to invest in the prevention and control of this global problem caused by mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles.

However, according to reports from the WHO itself, efforts to counter this disease have stalled, especially in recent years. Undoubtedly, in 2021 the call will be to continue with the promotion of measures that prevent its proliferation, in a context dominated by the current pandemic and global warming, a factor that promotes the expansion of the mosquito.

Prevention starts at home

In this hot and rainy season, different measures can be implemented to help prevent mosquito breeding sites and their bites. Here are some of them:

  • Avoid having stagnant water in any outdoor container that could collect it.
  • If you have pets, constantly change their water containers.
  • Check that all drinking water containers are covered or sealed very well.
  • If you usually place vases with flowers, change the water and wash them at least every other day.
  • Constantly mow overgrown garden weeds or grass.
  • Dispose of tires that are not in use and if you detect places in your neighborhood where there are abandoned tires, report them.
  • Keep indoor and outdoor spaces clean and disinfected.
  • Try to wear light clothing with long sleeves and repellent.
  • Place screens for doors and windows.
  • If you are going on vacation or planning a quick weekend getaway, try to stay away from wells, ponds or streams where there could be stagnant water.
  • Unfortunately, some of the symptoms of malaria resemble those of Covid-19. If you have any discomfort, go to the nearest doctor.
