August 26 is International Dengue Day. It is a constant reminder about the danger of this disease, as well as the importance of taking preventive measures to avoid contracting it. The rainy season has already begun and with it, the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which doesn’t care about quarantines or lockdowns. In a context such as the current one dominated by COVID-19, it is essential to beef up on our efforts, since at first glance dengue symptoms could be confused with those of COVID-19 and vice-versa.
In the last couple of days there have been cases of people who have contracted both diseases at the same time with fatal results. During July in Jalisco, for example, there were already 5 cases of men who contracted both diseases. In June there was a 150% increase in dengue cases compared to 2019, while that same year there was a 250% increase compared to 2018.
We must start to act now and prevent the increase in dengue cases. Therefore, we must carry out these very simple measures:
- Avoid piling of garbage.
- Avoid watertight in containers.
- Prune your gardens, mow your lawns
- Wash water tanks and cisterns and keep them closed.
- Wear clothes that don’t expose your limbs and use repellants.
- Install screens on doors and windows.
- If you have any symptoms, seek medical attention.
